Slow worm (Anguis fragilis)

the slow-worms need the shed more than I do

as well as grand schemes of self sufficiency, I also plan to build a tool shed at our allotment to save us carting the spades and rakes up the hill each time we visit. I have a number of constituent parts, including several large wood panels. as building hasn’t yet begun the panels are laying on the grass at the bottom of the plot. even before I water and weed, my first job is to see what is lurking under the panels. occasionally I see a common lizard accompanying the slugs, snails, woodlouse and enormous spider. but recently I keep finding more and more slow-worms. four at one time is my record.

when I show them to my son, I ignore how confusing describing them as a legless lizard will be for him and plough on with my biological correctness.
